Our first sighting of Amerks manager, Scott Jones, brings fans a little something to talk about early in the GHL off-season. We caught up with Jones in the front offices briefly this morning. “We have all of our scouts back from their season assignments around the junior leagues and across the pond. We are committed to tracking the draft eligible players throughout each season and yesterday we started compiling our lists and began ranking this years draft class. We will continue meeting today and throughout the week and get our finalized list together by the end of this week, most likely, and be ready when the league makes the official announcement on eligibility for this years class. We think this is the most talented group of eligible players we’ve seen to this point and we’re very excited as an organization and we also think this years draft will be significant league wide. This is a special year with the expansion team coming in as well so we’re also putting together our expansion draft plan. We’ve pretty much decided who we’ll be protecting and we’re concentrating now on the amateur draft. With a couple of picks in the first round, we know we’re going to be able to bring in some really good talent this summer.” The Americans hold picks 18 and 23 in the first round and even though Jones wouldn’t comment, there have been rumors that the team would be willing to trade one of those picks to move back and obtain a couple of more picks. It’s obvious that Jones thinks there is a lot of talent eligible this year and would like to make the most of it. Jones would also not comment on the teams expansion draft plan but we do know that Jake McCabe, Connor Hellebuyck, Devin Shore and Nic Dowd are all ineligible to be drafted by the expansion team. Shore and Dowd are both expected to make the Amerks out of camp this fall and Hellebuyck and McCabe have already staked their claims to permanent roster spots.

Rumors from the Big Apple indicate GM Jones has been very busy coming out of the expansion draft and leading into the amateur draft. The Amerks were reportedly shopping young netminder, Connor Hellebuyck, but with Vancouver selecting J.F. Berube in the expansion draft, the club has verified that Hellebuyck will stay with the team. There are currently very strong rumors that Jones appears to be making a push to pick up some very valuable players and has likely already done so. One deal swirling about is that scoring forward Jonathan Marchessault has been traded to New York along with defenseman, Cody Goloubef, in exchange for youth and a pick. It appears that young forwards, Tanner Kero and Nic Dowd, along with a 3rd rounder and a couple other minor league players are headed to St. Paul in a move that most importantly adds a goal scorer to the teams top six group to compliment Kessel and Kreider. Jones also reportedly has been at work shoring up the blueline, with a deal we just heard was finalized with Moncton only a short time ago. New York is said to be adding both Niklas Hjarlmarsson and Jared Spurgeon from Moncton in exchange for Sami Vatanen and New York's 1st round pick in 2018. Hjarlmarsson and Spurgeon added to the D corp already in place seems to improve the Amerks blueline significantly, even with losing Vatanen in the deal. As of today, if these rumored deals are approved by the league, the Amerks defense will shape up nicely this season with Giordano, Barrie, Leddy, Hjarlmarsson, Spugeon, McCabe and Goloubef all but assured of being the 7 man defensive roster for the upcoming season. With a lot of work apparently already behind the team, we know that Jones will be concentrating on Wednesday's draft kickoff with a pair of 1st rounders still in his pocket, even after consummating the deals we believe will be confirmed very soon. It has been reported that New York's offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday July 17th, which is likely in preparation for the draft. It will be interesting to see what Jones has up his sleeve once the draft is over and free agency starts, given that he has apparently started the off-season by making a big splash to improve the club.

Amerks fans noticed a lot of changes to the roster in New York’s opening night 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Hornets. Veteran, Patrick Eaves, scored twice in his Amerk debut. Michael Grabner also scored, while Mikael Backlund added an assist. Also new to the 2017-18 version of the club are defnseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, Jared Spurgeon and Paul LaDue as well as forwards Jonathan Marchessault, Tomas Tatar, Devin Shore, Michael Ferland and Arturri Lehkonen. That’s 11 players on the 23 man roster that were not on the roster last season. Expectations are very high in the Big Apple for the new look Amerks after what was a very busy summer for GM Scott Jones. Jones made 8 off-season trades.
#1) Jones brought in Marchessault from St. Paul along with Cody Goloubef. Jones gave up some youth to bring in the under-sized goal scorer, sending Nic Dowd and Tanner Kero along with a 2017 3rd round pick, Steven Kampfer and Jake Paterson to the Stars. #2) Jones then mortgaged a 2018 1st round pick, Mason Raymond and Sami Vatanen in a deal with Moncton to acquire Hjalmarsson and Spurgeon to improve the defensive corps. #3) Grabner came to New York via Hamilton along with a 2017 1st and 2nd rounder in exchange for Lee Stempniak and a 2017 1st rounder. Jones used those two picks in the draft to select Lehkonen and LaDue. Lehkonen will make his Amerks debut on Saturday against New Jersey after being a healthy scratch on opening night. LaDue made the 23 man roster but is expected to be used in a 7th man role due to a very good top six on the blue line. #4) Derrick Brassard was dealt to Milwaukee along with a pick for Justin Bailey and a pair of picks. #5) Jones then acquired Eaves from Hershey in exchange for Barclay Goodrow and a 2018 3rd. #6) Goloubef was flipped along with a 2017 3rd round pick to acquire Tatar from Boston. #7) Brandon Pirri was flipped in a second deal with Moncton to acquire Ferland. #8) A 2018 5th round pick was sent to Cleveland to acquire goaltending depth in Chris Dreidger.
After adding 9 of the 11 new roster players via trade, Jones signed top line Center, Mikael Backlund in free agency to a 6 year deal 38.85 million dollar deal with an AAV of 6.475 million. Backlund was given the honor of wearing the alternate captain ‘A’ on his sweater this season with Captain, Ryan Callahan, suffering a hip injury. There is a lot of talk around the club that the captain may be placed on LTIR this season. The final addition to the roster is 2015 Milwaukee 3rd round pick, Devin Shore, who was acquired at the trade deadline last season. Shore made his GHL debut on opening night, logging 13:07 of ice time and recording 4 hits.

AMERKS DROP TWO STRAIGHT AFTER 3-0 START
New York opened the 2017-18 season with a five game home ice stretch. An opening night 4-2 win over Pittsburgh was highlighted by a 2 goal effort from Patrick Eaves, a pair of assists from Nick Leddy. Brock Nelson added a goal and an assist, including the game winner. Eaves continued his hot start to the season with another goal, his 3rd in two games, in a 3-1 win over cross river rival, New Jersey. Casey Cizikas scored and added an assist on Mark Letestu’s game winner and Jared Spurgeon added 2 helpers. The Patrick Eaves show continued as the veteran winger added two more goals in a 3-2 edging of Chicago. The difference in the Amerks 3rd straight win to open the season was Phil Kessel’s 1st of the year, which came with just 1:16 remaining on the clock. Game four brought the first loss at the hands of Hamilton’s, Petr Mrazek. Mrazek turned aside 47 shots as New York out shot the Tiger’s 49-21 but couldn’t overcome a great night between the pipes for Mrazek in a 4-2 loss. Edmonton came to town as Connor Hellebuyck made his season debut in relief of a struggling Cam Talbot, who’s play, despite starting the season at 3-1, has left something to be desired coming into the first year of his new 6 year deal. The undisputed #1 goaltender has posted a meager .877 save % to go with a decent 2.25 GAA in his first four starts. Hellebuyck would fair a little better in his first start despite New York dropping to 3-2 in a 2-1 loss to the Beaver’s. Hellebuyck turned aside 26 of 28 shots, posting a .929 save % as the Amerks were out shot for the first time in their first five, 28-26. New York has out shot their opponents 176-101. “It’s not enough”, said GM, Scott Jones, “We don’t feel that this is the start we wanted. We feel like we could be 5-0. We should be 5-0. We came into this season with very high expectations and those have to be met this year”. Cam Talbot spoke to repoters briefly after practice today. “Without a doubt, I have to be better. I’m not happy with my start but I know I gotta stick with it here. I know I can be better. I know the team and the fans expect me to be better.” Amerks coach, Terry Michael, confirmed that Talbot will be back between the pipes for the teams next matchup vs. Cleveland as New York heads into a back to back with the Barons and Hamilton Friday night. Michael did not comment on the teams consistant line juggling from night to night and no one brought that topic up today.

AMERKS CONTINUE TO TREAD WATER
The New York Americans continue to play .500 hockey. After opening with a five game home stretch the Amerks hit the road for five games, going 2-2-1 in that set, bringing their overall record to 5-4-1 on the season. New York opened the road swing suffering a 6-4 loss in Cleveland. Wayne Simmonds and Claude Giroux vicimized the Amerks for 2 goals and 2 assists each while linemate, Brad Marchand, added 3 assists as the Barons top line put up 11 points. The Amerks rebounded with a 3-2 win in Hamilton a night later. New York held the Tigers to 2 goals and just 15 shots on net, despite giving them 6 powerplay opportunitites. Calle Jarnkrok scored a goal and added an assist in game three of the five game swing as Johnstown held the Amerks to just a Chris Kreider powerplay goal in a 2-1 Chiefs win. The Amerks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game four of the trip but the expansion Calgary Wranglers managed to score 3 unanswered to salvage a tie. The Amerks then rolled into Chicago and netted 3 goals on the man-advantage en route to a 5-3 win to bring their powerplay output to 11 goals in 10 games and boosted their powerplay percentage to north of 35%. Despite a lot of success on the powerplay and outshooting their opposition 167-74 on the road trip, the Amerks continue to struggle between the pipes. New York is only allowing 2.595 goals against per game but the team save percentage has dipped to just above 85% and that has GM Jones very concerned, especially after shelling out 5.825 million in annual average salary on top netminder, Cam Talbot, this past off-season. It seems the goaltending woes are definitely holding the reigns to the Amerks success. New York is outshooting their opponents by nearly 2 to 1, 343-175. Patrick Eaves leads the team in scoring, averaging a point per game with 6 goals and 4 assists. Chris Kreider leads the league in powerplay goals with all 5 of his tallies coming with the extra attacker. Kreider’s success on the man-advantage has led the Amerks to the top powerplay unit in the league. The penalty kill is operating at better than 81% and Mikael Backlund has anchored the Amerks top line with 7 assists and 8 points. Can the Amerks turn around their misfortune in net and improve to the team that every other area of the rink seems to indicate that they are?

SEATTLE BREAKS AMERKS UNBEATEN STREAK
Just days after New York and Seattle shook hands on a deal that brought defenseman Jeff Petry and a 3rd round pick to the Americans and sent Winger Michael Ferland to Seattle, the Metropolitans paid a visit to the Big Apple and New York will look to forget this game. The Amerks saw their 5 game unbeaten run (4-0-1) come to an end as Seattle earned just their 2nd victory on the season in convincing fashion, blasting 8 goals past Cam Talbot and doubling up the Amerks 8-4. The Amerks could not recover from a 4 goal first period deficit as Richard Panik terrorized the Amerks with a 4 goal performance. Aleksander Barkov scored a goal and added 3 assists for the Metros and Daniel Sedin chipped in 3 helpers. Ferland’s short stay in New York ended with just 4 games played and 1 assist but his return saw him score his 1st goal of the season against his old club at 12:23 of the 2nd period. That goal would end up counting as the game winner. “We just put this one behind us. We forget about it. We’re not going to look at the tape. We’re not going to spend any time on this one at all” stated Amerks coach Terry Michael in the post game press conference. Up next for New York is a back to back set vs Philly at home on Saturday and a visit to cross river rival New Jersey on Sunday.

Can Talbot?
New York Americans GM, Scott Jones, obviously had a lot of confidence in netminder, Cam Talbot, when he inked the 30 year old to a 6 year 35 million dollar contract this past off season but that confidence is waning in New York’s front offices. Talbot has been less than impressive and at some points, downright awful, in the first season of his new deal and has currently ceded his starting job to Amerks up and coming star, Conner Hellebuyck, who has started 2 of the teams last three games and is slotted to be manning the pipes Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. Talbot’s struggles have been mind boggling. Talbot earned his contract in his first three seasons with the Amerks, posting a 66-41-19 record in 126 career starts. Coming into this season, Talbot was sporting a career .927 save % to go with his 2.08 GAA and 19 shutouts. This season has been a completely different story. In 16 starts this year, Talbot is 8-7-1 with a .846 save %, 3.19 GAA and has not blanked an opponent to date. “He has to be better” stated GM Jones this morning after an optional Sunday morning skate for the Amerks. “Cam knows he has to be better, the goaltending overall has to be better. It’s no secret what we’ve been doing to teams on the ice and that our goaltending is hurting us. We’re trying to address that.” The Americans find themselves playing just below .500 hockey and that’s not good enough in New York. The Amerks continue to out work opponents, being out shot just 4 times in 22 games. They are averaging 33 shots for per game while allowing just under 21 shots per game. This is a goaltending issue, nothing more, nothing less. If the Amerks still have championship aspirations, they better hope the goaltending situation improves immensely.

AMERKS FIRE COACH…
The New York Americans announced today that they have fired head coach, Terry Michael. Michael has been the bench boss in New York since 2010 and in his six plus year stint with the team, Michael has amassed a 288-210-111 record with the club and his .578 win % ranks 8th in contemporary GHL stats. “It’s disappointing” remarked Michael this morning as the team took the practice ice without him for a bag skate under the guidance of newly named interim coach, Justin Brassard. “We definitely haven’t lived up to expectations this season, mine or the front offices, and when that happens, changes are going to be made. I don’t want to sound cliche but we all know this is a business. I enjoyed my time here in New York and I wish the players and the organization the best in the future”. Michael did not take questions.
GM Jones came to the podium shortly after Michael’s exit and issued the following statement. “This is the hardest thing a manager has to do. I have a lot of respect for Terry but we felt the time was right for this move. Every analyst around the league has had opinions of the struggles this season. We’ve heard it all. The goaltending is the problem. The defense is the problem. I honestly don’t think either of those things is the issue. Look at the roster. Compare it to rosters throughout this league. We believe this is the best roster we’ve put together and there is no doubt that this team should not only be better than we are, but much better”.
The Amerks are currently sitting in 9th place in the Campbell standings with an 18-15-2 record. That puts them just a game out of 5th in the very tight conference and just a game out of 2nd in the Norris division. However, despite Jones’s statement today, the stats say something completely different about this team. Both goaltenders have a sub .900 save %. Hellebuyck holds a .891 mark while Talbot has struggled considerably this season and has managed just an .848. Talbot is allowing 3.41 goals per game while Hellebuyck is letting in 2.62. The team is just a +1 overall while only 6 players are on the plus side of the ledger. Michael Grabner(+12), Tyson Barrie(+9), Brock Nelson(+8), Mark Giordano(+4), Mikail Backlund(+4) and Patrick Eaves(+2) have been the players the Amerks have leaned on thus far but they need to find more contribution from stars such as Phil Kessel, Chris Kreider and Jared Spurgeon. Nick Leddy has been performing well point wise but his -9 sits on a long list of players who on the ice for more goals when the opponent scores than they are when the Amerks do. Niklas Hjalmarsson, who was brought in to provide his defensive expertise is a -10. The only player worse is Jeff Petry(-14), who has sat in the press box more than he’s been on the ice since being brought in from Seattle.
Will this firing help turn the team around? That’s obviously what Jones is hoping, but there is a lot of work ahead and this move makes one very strong statement. New York does not understand why this team is under-performing…

New York Americans GM, Scott Jones, has been in his office this weekend. One would think that he’d be distracted by the back and forth with Moncton’s manager, Owen Durkin, but Jones isn’t concerned with Durkin. He is, however, very concerned with his team’s on ice performance. The Amerks have not lived up to very high expectations this year and even though Jones has 6 weeks until the GHL trade deadline, Jones is staring at February 26th on his desk top calendar. The Americans have plenty of talent that Jones could leverage for futures with 5 upcoming UFA’s at the end of this season in Jonathan Marchessault, Michael Grabner, Jeff Petry, Jared Spurgeon and Tomas Tatar. Jones would also likely look into moving oft injured but extremely productive veteran winger, Patrick Eaves. Is Jones disappointed enough to ship out his underachieving #1 goaltender, Cam Talbot, even after committing to him via a 6 year contract this past summer. With young under-study, Connor Hellebuyck, pushing Talbot very hard this season that might be a possibility. Hellebuyck is out-playing his mentor with a better record, lower GAA and higher save percentage this season, but neither has been impressive by any stretch this season. It is very unlikely that Jones would move anyone else on his roster but he definitely has some leverage if his team can’t find a way to be consistent over the course of the next month. Make no mistake, Jones is disappointed that his overhaul this summer is not living up to his expectations and Jones will definitely be a player at the deadline if his team remains on the outside of the playoff picture.

AMERKS HEATING UP
The New York Americans have had a rough season. Long time coach, Terry Michael, was fired by the team on December 29th and the reins were handed to current bench boss, Justin Brassard. In 15 games since the head coaching change, the Amerks have gone 7-3-5, climbing the standings, and are currently sitting in 2nd in the Norris division. Their present 7 game unbeaten streak (5-0-2) is their best of the season, topping a 5 game unbeaten run between 10/26 and 11/4 when the team went 4-0-1. Since the coaching change, Cam Talbot, has taken back his #1 spot between the pipes, going 5-1-3 in 9 starts with a .916 save % and a 2.11 GAA. In the previous 9 games, Talbot has gone 3-5-1 with a .832 save % and a 4.00 GAA. All Star, Patrick Eaves, has been the teams best player all season, but since the coaching change, he too, has been even better, collecting 19 points, including 12 goals and 7 assists, in the 15 game stretch, propelling himself into a 3 way tie for most goals on the season with Tyler Johnson (ALK) and Mark Scheifele (HAL) at 31. Eaves had 12 points, 9 goals and 3 assists, in 15 games prior to the switch. Eaves linemate and Amerks top line pivot, Mikael Backlund, has 17 points in the same 15 games, with 2 goals and 15 assists. Backlund now finds himself leading the league in helpers, with 36. Can this trend under Brassard continue into the playoffs? The Americans are 2 games into a tough 5 game road trip with visits to Cincinnati, Alaska and Boston coming up on the schedule before they head home.

JOSI MAKES MUCH ANTICIPATED DEBUT IN LOSS
The N.Y. Americans welcomed Roman Josi and Stephen Johns into the locker room just hours before the team took the ice vs. Halifax. The Americans lost 4-2 but the excitement around the team could not be higher after Amerks GM, Scott Jones, was able to add Josi before the trade deadline. Jones and Moncton GM, Owen Durkin, apparently put aside their recent differences and agreed to a blockbuster deal on Thursday, which after much ado, was finally approved by the league on Sunday, almost 72 hours after the two GM’s had shaken hands on the trade.
“It appears there was some confusion about the intent of the trade and apparently the wording of the deal” said Jones after tonight’s game. “I’m not gonna get hung up on how this was portrayed by some outlets. Neither myself or Mr. Durkin did anything intentionally to circumvent league rules or policies. There was some unclarity on my part, I’ll admit to that, but I’m not going to worry about it. We are going to concentrate on getting these guys acclimated to the system and on winning hockey games. We were out to improve our team defense and I definitely think we got that done…finally. I’d also like to tip my hat to Mr. Durkin, we worked hard to get this deal done and it’s a testament to his professionalism that we can still come together and broker a power deal like this one”.
The Amerks are averaging 2.85 goals against per game and their 168 goals against is 2nd worst in the Norris division. They certainly needed an upgrade, but it comes at the cost of Nick Leddy and Tyson Barrie, two outstanding offensive threats from the blue line.
“We felt that with Jared (Spurgeon) and Gio (Mark Giordano) and, of course, bringing in Josi, we’d still be pretty stout offensively on the back end while we improved the defensive side of the puck immensely. That’s not to take anything away from Leds (Nick Leddy) and Tyson (Barrie). We loved both of those guys here and we’re going to miss them and we wish them the best. When you get a chance to bring in a Roman Josi, you have to do everything in your power to make it happen”. said Jones.
Before tonight’s loss, the team had won 5 straight and are a respectable 9-4-2 in their last 15. The two newcomers won’t have much time to settle into the Big Apple as the Amerks embark on a four game road swing which starts in Quebec on Tuesday, but Josi and Johns won’t have to wait long before catching up with their old mates in Moncton. After visits to Montreal and Adirondack, the Americans will cap the road trip on the 25th vs. the Golden Flames before coming home for a six game stand.

AMERKS TRADE FOR FISHER
Mike Fisher scored for Adirondack in a 1-1 tie last night against New York and today Fisher finds himself donning his familiar #12 in a red, white and blue jersey instead of the familiar green and black he’s worn since 2012. Fisher had 115 goals and 124 assists in 5 plus seasons with the Aces and with 47 points this season, he’s on pace to surpass his modern era career best 54 points, put up in 2010-11 with Cornwall.
“Mike brings in playoff experience. He won the cup 2 years ago. He puts up points and he’s going to jump in here and help us win, without a doubt” said Amerks GM, Scott Jones, about an hour after announcing the deal. “We worked hard to get this done. We really wanted Fisher right from the start of our deadline negotiations. Joe (Pizzo) and I had been talking even before the Josi deal, Fisher was our target the entire time and I’m very happy that we got this done a couple days ahead of the deadline”.
New York sent Devin Shore and their 2018 3rd round pick as compensation for Fisher. “We think Devin has a bright future, we wish him the best with the Aces”. Said Jones. Shore was selected in the 3rd round by Milwaukee in 2015 and traded to New York at the deadline last season. In his first GHL season, Shore has 13 points in 39 games and has been filling in on New York’s top line in the absence of Casey Cizikas.
With Fisher coming in, it’s expected that he’ll play a 3rd line center role between Phil Kessel and Arturri Lehkonen but head coach, Justin Brassard, will have options with Fisher, Backlund, Cizikas and Letestu down the middle once Cizikas returns from his injury, which the team expects to be sometime within the next 7-10 days. The Amerks hope to have Fisher in the line-up tomorrow night in Moncton.

AMERKS DOSE FLAMES, 8-0
Roman Josi and Stephen Johns each had an assist in their first visit back to Moncton after being traded from the Flames to the Americans on the 18th. Cam Talbot only faced 9 shots en route to recording his first shutout of the season. Jonathan Marchessault netted a hat trick and Brock Nelson added a goal and 2 assists after being moved to fill the top pivot role following Devin Shore being traded to Adirondack as part of the compensation for Mike Fisher, who was held without a point in 16:51 of ice time. Hidden behind the outpouring of offense was Tomas Tatar. Tatar has been the subject of trade rumors recently after expressing that he wasn’t happy in his fourth line role with the Amerks and may have chosen the night before the trade deadline to make his case to other playoff teams across the league by making the most of his 7:32 of ice time by contributing a goal and an assist to score sheet. The Amerks have made a pair of trades in the days leading up to tomorrow’s midnight deadline, bringing in Josi, Johns and Fisher. It’s doubtful they will bring in any other big names with cap space now extremely limited but there is no doubt they have improved considerably on an already formidable line-up. Amerks fans are excited as the team pushes toward their 7th straight playoff appearance.
