Mystery solved.
The simulation tried to load the lineups last night and because there were lineup holes due to injuries, the sim went fishing for replacement players to plug the holes in the Toro lineup. Here's where the trouble occurred. The Toros currently have 3 defensemen injured. This is half the problem. The other half is that fact that Toronto only has 8 d-men on their roster to include both Bigs and Minors.
The simulation always expects to find at least one position guy to plugin and effectively shit the bed when it couldn't find a player.
Short term, I think the best way to proceed for tonight is for me to take a minor league winger and plug him in on defense for the game. He will be adversely impacted by playing out of position and having a crappy d rating. Dan, you may want to adjust your 3rd line d pairings for tonight to limit the amount of ice time this d pairing will get.
Longer term, teams should make sure that they have sufficient depth for both forwards and defense when fleshing out rosters with minor league players. I would suggest having at least 12 d men and 24 forwards at a bare minimum. A good rule of thumb is probably 15 or 16 d and 29 or 30 forwards.
This is the rationale for forcing teams to have 5 goaltenders so if a few guys go down, you have enough organizational depth to still play the games.

A7140 Schnarr, Nate has been tapped to play D for the Toros tonight...
He is now showing up on the Toronto roster as a D-man.

I’m totally against a fwd playing Def if it’s not on his card …. I sign guys in the off season making sure that I have enough of everything centers wings lw &rw defensemen …. Of course goalies …. A team any team not doing this and getting injuries is on them , he plays with 5 def but yes I know the sim won’t allow it , bottom line this sucks for Cincinnati waiting because of Toronto not doing the right thing making sure he had a full roster with compliment of positions needed

Series winning goal in OT probably... How about Minus 3, No Shots, No Blocks, No Hits in 21+ Mins of Play... Not anyone's fault...Just goes to show you, that putting together a team that has Fortitude and Prowess on both sides of the puck, is more important than icing a team with low fortitudes and hoping for the best. Either way, a nice season for Toronto! Congrats to both Cincy and Toronto.

I don’t think it’s the worst problem in the world to be forced to use someone out of position in extreme circumstances. 3 injured defensemen isn’t unheard of but I think qualifies as an extreme circumstance.

Just a heads up that I have been working on getting the 2021-22 season award ballots prepped, they might be ready before the weekend is over (as if there wasn't enough fun stuff going on already).
