I think it was decided on that it can NOT be NHL games. We'd run out of players in a few years. I don't think it was ever decided what the NHL games would be, the AHL games would be, and the combo of the two would be.

gtgfhl.proboards.com/thread/5904/proposed-rule-change-prospect-determinationThe change would be that a drafted player (at least top 3 rounds if not all) would be considered a prospect until he plays at least 20 (10 if a goalie) NHL games before losing his prospect status. We have too many cases of guys playing in the minors for a year or 2 of seasoning and maybe only have one year (or no years) of NHL experience under their belt to aid an owner in determining what to do now that his ELC is over. This would also keep these players salaries from hitting the books until they were no longer prospects.

Excellent point Brenden. We might be able to add something that they would lose their prospect status after they played 80, 100, some number of total games int he AHL or NHL.
The Big man didn't rule on this specifically. Other than to say 'it's adopted'.
Suffice it to say...Draft picks are proper now and MUCH more valuable. No more 800-900K guy not playing and having a decent card and getting paid for 3-4 years thusly.

Yes, but the flip side of the coin is that it's going to be more difficult to fill out a 45 man roster unless we're still going to count these as players toward that, in which case, the salary cap gets fubar. If all my players had to play 20 NHL games before counting toward the cap, I'd probably be lucky to have 30 players against the cap as I'm sure would be the case for many teams.

I just did a quick one over on my team only and using 20 NHL games/10 for goalies would give me 10 less players on my roster. So I think we might have to lower the minimum players level by a bit, maybe down to 40. My other concern is the cap. This will certainly artificially inflate the cap and possibly cause over bidding again, not that it ever went away. I like the rule, we just need to make sure we think about every aspect it will have an effect on.

Would it be in effect for this season? If so, Glenn would have to update the prospect status on the current draft eligible players. Also, would it retroactively turn players into prospects or would it only affect drafted players this year and forward?

I don't believe it goes into affect until next season...
My recommendation would be to keep this clean. Use 20 NHL games for skaters and 10 for goalies. I wouldn't set an AHL # of games simply because players in the minors do not count against NHL caps. Drop minimum roster requirements to 40 while keeping the cap at 50 to allow leeway for these players to be added to rosters and set the cap at the NHL level or leave it the same as we have it set (NHL + 2.5m) to continue to allow for the extra players.

If this goes into effect, there’s very few reasons to have minor league players on your roster as everyone would now have to had played 20 NHL games to no longer be considered a prospect.
1 of 2 things needs to happen.
1. We leave it as is, and has been, for a long while now.
2. Chop the rosters to 30 max, 4 goalies max, and have a cap on prospects at 15.
NHL teams have a 50 roster limit. That’s because they have a minor league team. Unsigned prospects do not count against the limit. If we’re worried about these contracts being useless and put the 20 NHL games into effect, just chop the roster to 30 max (includes goalies). Allows you to prep for injuries and still carry a couple prospects who have hit that 20 games on your roster.

Actually disregard the last post. Here’s what I just came up with:
Keep the prospect status as it has been for years, BUT add in that until a drafted player plays 20 NHL games (10 for goalies), there contract is set at league minimum ($100,000) regardless of what round they’re drafted in.
So keep with the current amount of games to show a prospect status like we’ve been doing. Start the contract once they hit I think it’s 20 games either NHL or AHL, but until they hit 20 NHL games, have them make what they would in the AHL in real life. Then once they hit 20 NHL games, the contract goes to whatever round they were drafted in.
This would ensure we never run out of players with what the current limits are, while also giving the owners only $100,000 cap hit per drafted player with an unusable card and still running years off the contract like it would in real life.
Thoughts?

Brenden, you do realize that many players will hit 20 NHL games, thus starting their pro contract and still not have a usable card.
