..."It doesn't bother me that others have an opinion about our methods here in Moncton", says Owen Durkin after an informal presser announcing the arrival of Brent Burns and Ray Emery.
"I'm pissed off about our results...that's what I care about...other league personnel, fans; they're all entitled to an opinion...I don't get worked up about any of that stuff". Durkin continues: I care deeply about the way we are trending as a group, and I care about our fans in Moncton, who deserve a competitive, professional hockey club, and to my mind, the formula for that is sustainability, depth, and hard hitting responsible, 2-way hockey".
Some in the local sports media circles have opined that the trading of the Sedin twins in the off-season was a rash decision:
"I'm not going to besmirch the excellent reputations of former players...I will only say that an army of two doesn't win many wars, and it takes good pieces to make the kind of moves we elected to make...Moncton needed a change as much as the twins needed a new opportunity, and we are, in my opinion, deeper, far more aggressive, and trending in the right direction".
Said Brent Burns on the change of scenery he's now facing:
"Moncton is always a handful to play against, and everyone in the league respects the no-quit mentality here...I like that, a lot...and I'm looking at the big picture, and how we stack up down the road as well as how we compete today".
On likely missing the playoffs this year: " Yeah, that part sucks, but I feel like we have enough guys here who know how to win, and we'll bring it every single shift, every single night, and lead by example for the younger guys". "You don't learn to win by playing to lose, and without the distraction that a high pick may be for some, there's no external pressure to tank for the sake of a pick".
Durkin concurs: "Ever see that movie with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage; the one where Connery takes the micro-processor thing that the terrorists want"?
"Remember what he did there"? "That's right, he dropped it on the ground and stepped on it...well, we aren't playing for pole position at the draft table...we are building a competitive team, and you dont learn to compete by insulting your fans and the history of the organization by laying down for your opponent, not even for a lottery pick" "Tank Nation is a hallucination...we don't entertain that fantasy-league crap".

There'll likely be no stains on the prom queen's dress in Moncton come year's end, but I'm fixing to thrash Rochester to the core tonight. I hope they weren't just needing to be held.

Newly minted Moncton Golden Flame Brent Burns collected the puck at the end of the game and once the mauling by his teammates subsided, it was presented to young Jacob Markstrom, commemorating his first win as an FHL'er.
"Classy move by Burnsy", said coach R.J. Huntley, beaming with pride in his young 6'6'' keeper. "That young man battled all night...twenty-two saves in the first two periods in which we were being outshout...what a competitor that young man has become".
"Great way to get things going, no question", said Burns, who assisted on the Luke Adam opening tally. "When your goalie battles that hard to give you a chance, you wanna empty the tank on every shift and get him that win".
The towering Swedish tendy was all smiles in front of the media at his locker room stall post-game, sporting the team's fireman's hat worn by the game MVP, in keeping with tradition: "Man, I feel like we just won a playoff game or something; everybody is really relieved and really happy right now...it's a great feeling, for sure". On his first win: "I don't think I've ever been more proud to be a hockey player...it's my first, but we won it as a team, and everyone battled all night...I don't think I'll ever forget this game".
"We are thrilled for Jacob", said GM Durkin, "you could see it in warmups that he had a little extra fire in his belly; just a look in his eyes". On the immediate impact of Brent Burns: "Brent has a ton of composure out there, and it rubs off on those around him...he knows how to let the game come to him instead of chasing it all night". "He's an impact guy on the ice and in the dressing room, and we are so pleased to have been able to work out a good deal with Halifax".
Luke Adam broke the seal on the contest in the first frame, and led the flames with five shots. Currently tied for third in points with nine, it was Adam's fifth goal of the season. "I think we are all settling into a bit of a rhythm, and I'm getting decent opportunities, some good special teams exposure, and I'm enjoying playing with "Juicy" (Jokinen), who just has amazing vision...he sees plays before they materialize, and he's been really supportive as well". Jokinen assisted on Adam's goal.
Moncton fans celebrated a moral victory as much as the two points it came with tonight, and look to carry the momentum into Syracuse in search of retribution after a recent 7-0 whitewashing. The December 4th game also marks the return of workhorse winger Scottie Upshall, who has been rehabbing intensively: "Been cleared for contact for about ten days, and I feel fantastic; I've done a ton of off-ice work with our strength coach and I've been staying on the ice a little longer at practice with Matty Perreault, just shooting pucks like crazy". "The guy's accuracy is off the charts, and he's been a ton of help...I can't wait to get out there and start contributing".
All in all, a great night of puck for Moncton Flames fans...
