Noticed my player Hartikainen who is an RFA this offseason just up and left for Russia. My question is say I sign him 2 years (2015) am I allowed to retain his rights for 100k, and seeing how he won't have a card in 2014-15 will he come back as a UFA that offseason or do I get him an extra year?
Just trying to understand if there's any point signing him longer than just this year for depth

Although I guess if I retain I'm allowed to do the UFA match still since he'd be my property?

If so, he will go through the RFA process (asking price/bids etc) and you can determine to sign him or left him go to another team (if bids made on him) or become a UFA. If you sign him you could retain him next year if he doesn't have a card for 100k but he loses a year of eligibility. You can do this for multiple years if you want. Once/if he does come back you will have the remainder of his years on the contract at which point he will become a UFA. I will need to research this to verify that he does lose a year instead of having his contract dererred (like a prospect).

Ok thats what I thought, but say I only sign him out to 2015 and retain but doesn't come back til 2017 would I still be able to use franchise points to UFA retain?
