bump:
I dont know how many of you caught this but if you look at your nhl stats for your players you see their positions change daily. For example I checked my nhl stats a few days back and noticed Frolik was listed as a C, now I check today and notice he is listed as a rw. This is also the case with other players I have.
Is it possible for the game engine to produce its own player position(s) rather then relying on the hockey news site? My point being I do not know how the hockey news determines this result.

The hockey news takes the positions that the player is listed in on the lineup cards that the coaches use. This changes often for some players.

John, while THN and NHL only show one position when you are looking at a specific player, I think both actually track all the positions played by the player. If you are trying to determine what positions your guys will be able to play next year, it's best to look at the rosters on THN. Frolik for example, is listed as a RW on THN: forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/player.php?5532 However, if you click Rosters at the top of that page, you will see that he is actually both a RW and C, which is what you can expect his card to be next year: forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/roster.php?WpgGlenn can correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I have always determined what positions my players will be able to play.

Good call on the link Ian. I know there was a little confusion in the past years with regards to THN position designations, but as you say here now..we should be able to write down the positions listed for all our players and have that stick for 2014-15.

You are correct Ian. Whatever THN says is the guys position in the summer when I grab their stats is what their card will say next year.

is there any reason the positions should/can/may change from now until summer ? You would have to ask the folks at THN. I just use what they have posted at the end of the regular season when I gobble up the stats.

Let me put it this way then....has anyone ever seen the THN position stats change from mid-year to off season ?
Glenn, we had some problems a year or 2 ago with THN positions being different from FHL cards. Just wanna square this away.

I know a few years back that some changed from the time I pulled them off the site (May) until the season started in October. There is nothing wrong with that as we are getting them at a point in time. It was asked when this happened before if the position that was currently showing (October) could be used instead of the May one and I answered in the negative. This is point in time just like the rest of the players stats are.

Player positions should be based on prior year just like stats. Current system works

I was messing around in excel this morning and think I found a few formulas I could use to match player names/positions with THN ID. Glenn, I'm assuming you need the THN ID and player positions on the same line in a spreadsheet? When the regular season ends, if you want to send me your master list with all the player names and their THN ID, I would be happy to match positions with each player - I don't think it should take me more than an hour or two. Once I copy every team's roster from THN to excel, I would just need to separate the text to multiple columns, switch the names to Last, First and then use a vlookup with the 2 lists of names to grab the positions. This obviously wouldn't work for anyone who does not show on a THN roster or has a slightly different name in your list than on THN. However, I doubt anyone is too concerned with the AHL positions right away and the name issues shouldn't take too long. I figure this would get a good 90%+ of the usable cards out of the way in one shot and I can go back and clear the other issues up over the following weeks.

I can actually just get the positions in between the regular season and start of playoffs so I have it done. Then you don't have to worry about rushing to send me the list and everyone will know their skater's positions are what they were when the regular season ended. I can just email you the excel sheet to send out to everyone. I can worry about matching them up with the player IDs whenever you're ready.
