D has always been the toughest rating to assign. It also uses the the most complex formula for any other ratings. It takes Players +/- as a function of teams +/-, Giveaways, takeways and blocked shots as well to arrive at a rating. With the advent of hockeu analytics we will be looking to use Corsi/Fenwick data to assist in this process moving forward.
For those unaware, the Corsi/Fenwick ratings use a teams shots on goal while the player is on the ice and compares it with the teams shots allowed when the player is on the ice. The logic being, you need to have possession of the puck, and therefore denying possession to the opponent, in order to record a team shot on goal. In reviewing last years results it was interesting to see guys like Datsyuk near the top. He has always been considered a stalwart defensive forward although the values we use to rate players may not have been doing him justice.

With that in mind, Scotty-NY has volunteered to do some leg work in reviewing the stats available to us in the above link assist in the facilitation of a Skype call to talk about the merits of the new stats.
