Tigers Set Foundation for 3 year cup run
Immediately after the heartbreaking game 7 loss to the Polar Bears the Tigers GM took a hard look at his team and realized there was an opportunity. "Listen our core had down years almost every player except for Geno took a hit. We also realized that with the upcoming draft we would be looking at players that couldn't come in and compete until the 2018-2019 season. It was also painfully clear we only have until the 2021 season with Malkin and Kopitar and we want to get them a cup."
By trading nearly every player that wouldn't be around or able to help for 2019-2021 they were able to acquire the 18th overall pick. "Savard and Grabner are great players and we had some great runs with them but they didn't want to waste a season in their prime on a team that is setting up for a run without them. By trading them to Seattle and NY Savard gets to help christen a new arena while Grabner gets his shot at a title." When asked about Zucker the GM seemed more disappointed "Yea with Zucker we didn't want to lose him but looking down the road he may have been pushed to 3rd or 4th line and he deserves a larger role." It's true that Hamilton will have a log jam at wing in the future with Mackinnon, Hertl, Burakovsky, Domi, Barbashev, Keller, Boeser and possibly Brodzinski all fighting for top 9 roles.
With the draft around the corner having acquired 5 picks in the top 18, this draft being important is an understatement. "It turned out beautifully we got our target at every pick which never seems to happen. Shit we drafted an entire line for the future. If we return to the finals it all started here. If these players pan out we have an entire scoring line and D pairing for 5 million dollars during our cup window. We should be going into next offseason with a lot of cap to acquire whatever we need to stage a serious run and still have our's and Moncton's 2018 firsts to acquire another asset that may help."
This strategy may create a dynasty or it very well could crash and burn. Only time will tell, but one thing is certain 2021 this team will be in serious cap trouble but hopefully with a cup or two to show for it. Now onto the draft recap
Clayton Keller
LW/C Selected 8th Overall
THN Future Rank - #1
Offense first forward, High end-skating, puck control, and vision paired with a deadly wrist shot it is no wonder why he has drawn comparisons to Patrick Kane. Will likely be in the Tigers top 6 sooner rather than later.
Thomas Chabot
D Selected 12th Overall
THN Future Rank - #3
Elite Skater who uses his best skill to move the puck up ice and escape pressure defensively. Named 2017 World Junior Championship MVP, 2017 QMJHL Playoff MVP to go along with the 2017 CHL Defenseman of the year. Expect big things to come from Chabot in the near future.
Charlie McAvoy
D Selected 13th Overall
THN Future Rank - #4
All-around defenseman who can log big minutes as evidenced by his trial by fire debut for Boston vs Ottawa in the playoffs. Another elite skater he combines solid physical play and awareness with excellent vision and a good hard shot. Look for him and Chabot to form a D pairing for the foreseeable future.
Brock Boeser
RW Selected 16th Overall
THN Future Rank - #19
Best wrist shot not in the NHL pretty much sums up Boeser. A top line/1st PP scoring threat with an unbelievable shot. 43 goals in 74 games for UND, battled through a wrist injury his sophomore year. While skating is a concern in his brief call up with the Canucks he led team in shots and goals for the final 9 games while seeing PP time with the Sedins.
Tyson Jost
C Selected 18th Overall
THN Future Rank - #11
Boeser's teammate at UND Jost is the type of player that makes everyone around him better. He has plenty of goal scoring ability but just as likely to set up a teammate. Has no glaring weakness in his game and is a fairly sure bet to be a future top 6 center on a scoring line.
