TEAM SPOTLIGHT : WASHINGTON FEDERALS
The Nation’s capital is abuzz as the Federals tear through the first quarter of the season. Washington sits in 1st place overall in the GHL with a 15-5-1 record after 21 games. The Federals offense has been led by Jeff Carter, T.J. Oshie and Justin Williams. Carter is tied for 1st in overall scoring with Boston’s Paul Stastny at 24 points and Oshie is tied for 2nd with Alaska’s Connor McDavid just a point back at 23. Williams sits atop the league in goals scored, tied with Syracuse’s Nazem Kadri at 15. Carter, Williams and Alex Steen all sit in the top 5 in plus/minus league wide as well with ratings of +19, 18 and 17 respectively. The team is a +30, which ranks 4th overall behind Cleveland’s +31, Alaska’s +37 and Boston’s incredible +43. The defense is led by Ian Cole, Kevin Klein and Michael Stone, each averaging over 2 blocked shots per game with Stone and Dennis Wideman both adding to the offense with 12 points each. Corey Crawford has posted a respectable .911 save % and 2.20 GAA as the clear starter while back-up netminder, Alex Stalock, has been nearly perfect in his 6 starts, spelling Crawford with a 5-1 record, .940 save % and a miniscule 1.33 GAA with 2 shutouts. The teams special teams rank in the top 10 league wide with the powerplay clicking at just over 25%, which is good for 4th best in the G, and the penalty kill operating at a kill rate of better than 85%, which ranks that unit 7th. Make no mistake about it, the Washington Federals are a force in the GHL this season and will battle Cleveland and Alaska all season for top honors in a crowded Adams division as they add to the league wide parity in the standings. The Adams division is seperated by just 9 points from the Federals top spot to Cincinnati in 5th. The Patrick’s differential from 1st to 5th is 11 points, 12 points in the Smythe and a league low of just 4 points seperate 1st from 5th in the Norris. But regardless of the league’s seemingly improved parity, Washington is a very good team and will undoubtedly continue to be among the top teams when you look at the standings this season.
