How quickly the mighty have fallen. After starting the season with a 20 game unbeaten streak (19-0-1) the Barons had a record of 28-2-5 at the Christmas break. To put that in perspective, the Barons had obtained 61 of a possible 70 points in their first 35 games of the season. If my math is correct that would have put the team on pace to reach 142 points. Was that sort of production realistic? Obviously not. The current single season point record is 127 by the 2017-2018 Boston Bears. Eclipsing that point total by 15 would be nearly impossible, but with their hot start the Barons had a realistic shot of beating the record.
Unfortunately, Cleveland must have enjoyed the holidays a little too much. Since games resumed the Barons have a horrific record of 0-4-3. What could be the cause of their recent setback? Could it be due to tough stretch of games? Possibly. 3 of the 4 losses were against current playoff teams (Alaska, Philadelphia, and Halifax) and 2 of the ties were against the hottest team in the league (Cornwall) and a team fighting for a playoff spot (Suffolk). But after their most recent defeat to the bottom dwelling Chicago Huron (4-1) there must be something amiss. Could it be Gabriel Landeskog?
At first glance his season doesn't stand out. Sure, he's almost a point per game player (22-13-35 in 37 games), but based on PPG he currently ranks 4th on the team behind Brad Marchand, Teuvo Teravainen, and Sean Couturier. Could it be his goal scoring? This time his GPG moves barely moves him past Couturier on the list. If you look at his other stats you'll see that's a good to great player, but he doesn't lead the team in any category.
That's when you look at the team record with him in the lineup versus him out of the lineup. Including the loss to Alaska where Landeskog was injured (he had 19:33 of ice time), the Barons' record with him in the lineup is 28-3-6. Without Landekog the team is 0-3-2. Obviously the sample size is small, but one thing is for sure. The Cleveland Barons are happy that Gabriel Landeskog will be back in the lineup tomorrow night against the St. Paul Stars!
