Good morning boys. Just a head's up. I am going to be busy today moving back home from camp. I will try to check in but I also have trade talks involving pick #38. I'm going to evaluate all 5 picks made yesterday and decide whether I'm trading or making my pick. I'm hoping not to hold up the draft, but it's possible that I may not be on if things somehow roll quickly this morning.

So now that most of the actual draftable players are gone, (I honestly thought there’d be a few more players that I just didn’t really see in my “scouting” of all this Be drafted already but no) can we decide to not sign draft picks or just not draft them? I’ll probably make my third round picks but the 5th is almost wasted, I’d rather just sign a few minors players or save the cap space for someone else. Probably a silly question but thought I’d ask it anyway

Even though there are still plenty of draftable players left, you have the option of dropping drafted players to free agency (essentially not signing them) at any time before their ELC expires provided that they have not played any games in the GHL.

True Scott, but I think Jon-Seattle means, there aren't many players left WORTH spending valuable cap on for some teams. This is a pretty thin draft class.

We treaded those waters quite a few years back and it really doesn't make sense to allow owners to bypass selections just because they don't LIKE what's on the board. Would this be allowed in the NHL as a way to circumvent the cap rules?

Would this be allowed in the NHL as a way to circumvent the cap rules? I totally agree, but it might be time to finally revisit the "Cost" of Draft Picks. We discussed it years back, and here we still are, spending valuable cap room on 4th and 5th Rd Pks that are many times pure guesses and players whom take up needed cap room. By the time they pan out, there contract term is up and we either have to resign them or let them walk. Most of the time, they walk into UFA in the GHL.

I agree and that's why we are currently floating the idea of changing the rules for what determines a prospect tag. I believe the initial idea is that all players will be prospects until they play 20 NHL games for skaters.

Isn't that how it is already, or do you mean 20 games period rather than 20 in a given season?

So, we are still over-paying for 4th and 5th Rd Pks...arguably 3rd's too. Not looking to argue, just looking to finally put some of these long talked about rule changes to bed.

I don't see how we're overpaying, they make less than they do in the NHL. The root of the problem is that in the GHL they count against the cap but in the NHL they don't unless they are on the 23 man roster.

That's exactly it, they count, therefore it hurts our cap room. Paying for them as they sit in our minors while taking away valuable 23 man roster room, can affect a teams ability to be competitive.

I know, that's why tabled the change. I don't think it's necessarily the cap dollars, however, it is indeed the fact that we're paying them when our cap is so similar to the NHL's
