Hey gents,
I am curious if going forward ie; next off-season, we might contemplate a small tweak regarding UFA rights.
I think having the ability to RETAIN one UFA is the right move as it re-circulates talent and adds value to FP which curtails over-trading.
Would it not be advantageous to be able to trade UFA rights for an additional asset thus allowing for more creative negotiations? Of course, this should come at a cost of FP -- perhaps 50% of what a UFA extension costs.
My reasoning is, when you look at rosters across the league, teams with more than one high-end asset with UFA status could retain their player of choice, and trade UFA rights prior to the signing period so that they may recapture some value while adding a new wrinkle to the trading process. It should make negotiating more creative and interesting, and it maintains the mandate of redistributing UFA's across the league.
Perhaps a team receiving a UFA via trade would forfeit the ability to sign their own UFA asset, while still being able to negotiate sign and trades --both selling and buying.
Summary: - Teams may re-sign one UFA per off season - Teams may trade UFA rights for one asset per off season
