That was also a question I posed earlier in the offseason, cause I know Ian has Alan Quine and he was pissed he didn't sign him to a pro contract since he spent the whole year in juniors and won't have a card next year.
I also wondered what would happen to Quine, whether he become a ufa, an rfa to Halifax, or be draftable since he'll still be under 25 when he has a card.

I'm pretty sure you're first post is correct, if they are only signed to a minor league deal, they cannot be retained and thus hit the open market as UFA's when they return

If every contract under 500K is minor league and unprotected.....then what is the sense in bidding for a player from 100K - 499K when you only get them for the single year and they go right back into the pool ?

Mostly just to fill out your roster and maybe get lucky on a guy that jumps into the pros. Two such players are on Ottawa's roster. Jake Muzzin and Rich Clune. Because someone had the foresight to sign Muzzin and bring in Clune on a trade, they will both be able to be signed to multi-year deals without going through free agency, and that sir is why sign players at that level. how can you 'get lucky' or 'get a jump' if he goes back into the pool ? -101K to 499K is just silly then. Sign ALL your minor leaguers to 100K only, if that is the case.
We should have a chance to sign ALL players that touch our minor league system - to bigger contracts.

I just explained how you can 'get lucky'. Don't get me wrong, I understand what you're saying, it's just not the way it currently works, you'll have to take that up with the Commish

The percentage of minor leaguers that stay in juniors or go overseas can't be that high as is. If he goes back to juniors after having an FHL card he has to be a 20 year old playing which is rare in itself as the CHL caps it at 3 over 20 players per team.
For overseas you generally know beforehand, Thats why I gave Timo Pielmier the bump to 500k this year so if he killed it over in germany i could retain him since I signed him to a pro contract.
If you have a great player in your scouting report that is at risk to spend the whole year in juniors and make a playoff run there so he doesn't have the opportunity for the last 5 ahl games, sign him to 500k to be safe.

The sense is you have a player in your system that may pan out and make your big club seeing as you have exclusive rights to resign him to a pro contract year after year or give him a 50% raise to stay in your system. Mike Kostka and Derek Smith both fir this bill for me.
