Absolutely agree, that's why it would cost a good amount of FP to negotiate with a UFA, I don't want them to sign for free, I don't want to make it easy, I want to make it possible as it is in the NHL. And don't start with this 'if it's in the game' unless you're going to tell me that this conversation is completely pointless because we're going to an age based free agent system.  We've been trying to find a way to spend FP for franchise improvements. Maybe one category is franchise loyalty. Say category maxs out at 50 FP that would allow you to retain 1 UFA per year at asking price. If you only put 25 FP into it you can resign 1 at 150% asking and if you haven't put any into the category you can resign 1 at 200% asking. Malkin at 200% asking is 10 mil and would be reasonable price for him to stay with a shitty franchise. Just ideas but I know we talked about using FP for thing other than trades in the past. |

Glenn, when I add up my player contracts and my available cap I come up with $73,858,250. I believe this number should be $74 million at minimum and that's without any cap carry. I don't know if I had any cap carry off the top of my head, I would have to check my spreadsheet when I get home today. Maybe it's counting Mattias Backman towards my cap? It's not a huge difference but if that number should in fact be $74 mil+ than maybe it's a sign of a potentially larger problem somewhere else.

10-4 Ian. Remember the cap carry over deducts and cap carry over from the previous year before applying the 33% to it. I can let you know what your cap carry over was when I get home as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if my cap carry last from last year is $0. However, even if we assume no cap carry, my contracts + available cap should = $74 million shouldn't it?

I guess I retained Koskinen for $100k last year as he's showing on my books. Is his full $585k salary counting towards my cap right now? That could be what it is.

Another note, in the past we temoprailly bumped up the cap by 2-3M prior to FA beginning with the thoughts that the owners will have some saving to get under the cap by signing guys to long term deals. I haven't added that temporary cap money in as of yet.

As per usual, the cap has been raised by about 5% for (up 3.5M dollars) to allow for savings generated from signing FAs to long term contracts. This 3.5 M will be reduced as we move to the later rounds of UFA.
