I've been trying to reconcile what the compliance page says my team salary is compared to what I am seeing on my roster page and it was just not adding up for some reason. Please correct me if I am mistaken, but my understanding is that the salaries that hit my books should include the Active Roster and the On Books - No Card section.
According to the Compliance Page my team salary is $66,077,561, accounting for 45 players.
Between my actives and no cards showing, the total I have come up with is $62,502,561, and for only 43 players. This resulted in a difference of $3,575,000, no small difference with free agency on the horizon.
In trying to figure out this discrepancy I looked back at previous Waiver threads as well as any players whose no card contracts I had eaten in past seasons. What I dug up/remembered was the following.
Prior to the 2015-16 season I had retained Viktor Tikhonov's rights for 100K.
Prior to the 2016-17 season I had retained Johan Gustaffson's rights for 100K. I also waived Tim Gleason with penalty, but do not recall what the penalty was for him (if anything).
Prior to the 2017-18 season I chose to eat the final year of Vincent Lecavalier's contract at a cap hit of $1,710,000, ad well as the second-to-last year of Jared Cowen's contract (a cap hit of $1,665,000).
Here's what I think has happened, the $3,575,000 difference is made up of the following:
Continued retaining of the rights to Tikhonov and Gustafsson (though subsequent waiver threads don't appear to address them, and I have yet to find evidence that I expressly intended to do so, although it is possible I did intend to at that time) $100,000 k x 2 = $200,000.
I think Lecavalier's contract is still being calculated against my cap even though that contract has lapsed as of the end of last season. $1,710,000.
Even though Jared Cowen's contract is showing for the 2019 season on my roster page, I believe I am getting hit with the same amount for last year as well, at an additional $1,665,000.
Add the 200K plus Vinny and Cowen's 2017-18 contract hits and it equals, you guessed it, the $3,575,000 difference between the compliance page and my current roster. I believe Tikhonov and Gustafsson are accounting for the two player difference between my roster page and the compliance page (with Lecavalier no longer active, he may not be getting perceived as a player even though his contract is affecting my cap).
From where I am standing, I believe the amounts for Cowen and LeCavalier from 2017-18 need to be addressed and my cap recalculated. I should be able to choose whether to retain Tikhonov or Gustafsson or not as during the offseasons when I originally did so.
Additionally, I don't believe I am the only club that is experiencing cap discrepancies. I took a look at a few other clubs with On Books - No Card players listed, and found similar looking issues with Chicago (Fedor Tyutin's contract may be the culprit as it looks like it's being counted twice) and Milwaukee's cap amounts (He had a couple of guys at 950K, one of them may be getting the double treatement). St. Paul was the third I looked at, but theirs appeared to check out fine. There may be other owners who might want to double check their numbers, as I think whatever is causing this is certainly centered around the On Books - No Cards area.
If someone can give me another way that works out the numbers I'll be all ears, but I think I might be right with this.
