As the 2020-21 Season begins, the Stampede has received exciting news. Rookie winger Matt Luff has earned the Calder Trophy as the leagues most outstanding rookie during the 2019-20 season. There was a slew of other worthy rookies in the GHL. Matt had a terrific season with the Stampede. Suiting up in 77 games, predominantly 3rd line duties, Matt scored 43 goals-25 assists for 68 points. He was actually a player whom was placed on Suffolk's early season trade block ( most of Suffolk's players usually are ).
GM Frey had this to say "Matthew had an outstanding season for himself! He showed great promise in the minors and we rewarded him with a fair 3 year contract. Most youngsters would be happy just to make the bigs...Matty didn't just come to the rink to play, he came to show us that we made the right move signing him to an extension. And we're mighty happy for him! Great kid! Until todays announcement, he was set to be a healthy scratch for our home opener. We made quite a few off season moves, and Matt had a slow camp. But, How can we do that to this kid...He's in the lineup against Pittsburgh now! We'll see what he shows us this week. Congrats Matt Luff!"

A New Season Awakens:
Colombus Day 2022 christens a new season in the GHL. Spirits are high and a buzz in the arenas across the league. No shortage of euphoria here in Suffolk as the Stampede open their season with last years GHL Cup opponents, Alaska Polar Bears. With all the hype and excitement abound, GM Frey was sure to keep the moment in context. “Oh, for sure we’re excited. Excited to get the new season underway. Excited for the youngsters to finally have their chances, for the new signings to make their marks. The Coaches and Staff are just as excited. Of course, the elephant in the room is not just hoisting those banners to the rafters, but doing it in front of the team you beat in the finals in order to have that privilege, the Polar Bears. We know that’s not going to be sitting comfortably with those boys in that dressing room. They’re surely not going to appreciate that fact. But, we don’t make the schedule. They’re going to have to take that up with the league office personnel…for sure it’s a slap in the ole kiester. But, we’re prepared. We’ve known who our opponents were going to be for a few weeks now, and we’re ready, willing and able for whoever comes into our barn. No matter what the occasion. The boys and staff deserve the accolades for their efforts last season. Webs ( Shea Weber ) will be dropping the ceremonial puck and we’ll be off to a new season. They can enjoy the moment, but come pick drop at center ice…it’s go time. Time to make new memories!”
GM Frey was reticent to acknowledge last season’s roster and wished the other key players were in attendance. Bryan Rust, Eric Haula, Alec Martinez, Colin Miller, Justin Schultz, Milan Lucic as well as key components Craig Smith, Chandler Stephenson and Vincent Trochek. “All of them will be sorely missed. We would have loved to have them all back in the mix. But this business is tough. They all were outstanding as Stampeders. Even more so as young men. We wish them nothing but success! Shea was able to play out his last days as a player in a Stampede sweater. Had an outstanding season statistically and was fortunate enough to walk away with a ring on his finger. Bravo to Mr Weber! We couldn’t be any happier for that gentleman. As a matter of fact, he’ll be in our organization as an assistant this year. He’s an ambassador to this fine game. When you come across people like that, you don’t just let them walk away. In Shea’s case, he approached us about that opportunity and we didn’t hesitate to keep him in our organization. We’ll, Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you all. It’s hockey time. Thank God!!”

Suffolk Stampede Congratulate Auston Matthews on his Franchise Achievement wherein he has eclipsed the 500 Point mark!
Matthews' first period primary assist tonight gave him a historic achievement, and a first for Suffolk Stampede History. That assist on Matthew Tkachuk's opening goal of the contest, put Auston Matthews into unchartered territory, as no Suffolk player has ever been able to accumulate as many points in a Stampede sweater.
A second period helper and a third period goal to closeout the contest between Suffolk and the Quebecois, would propel the Stampede to a 4-2 Win and helped Suffolk keep pace with the NY Americans. Suffolk is now 14-0-1 in their last 15 games.
A Special Editors Note: It may not seem surprising to hear that Matthews is Suffolk's first 500 Point scorer. Especially since Suffolk has the tendency to move players in and out of town more often than most. But, in reality, only 14 teams have had a player reach the Milestone Achievement.
Alaska- 3 Baltimore- 2 Boston- 3 Cincinnati- 2 Cleveland- 1 Colorado- 3 Cornwall- 1 Edmonton- 2 Milwaukee- 2 Hamilton- 2 Montreal- 1 Philadelphia- 2 Quebec- 4 Suffolk- 1
*Only 4 teams with 100 or more trades have a 500 Point player, Cleveland, Colorado, Hamilton and now Suffolk.
**8 teams have 60 or Less trades, 5 of them with less than 45 trades.
***The longer the tenure with a team, the more likely the ability to achieve the milestone.
Matthews is Suffolk Stampede All Time Leader in Points(502), Goals(309), Assists(193), PPG(90), Plus/Minus(+128), GW Goals(44) and Game Tying Goals(9). He's played in 446 Games for Suffolk, Ranking him 3rd All Time behind David Backes(463) and Carl Gunnarsson(502).
Congratulations Mr Matthews. The Monkey is off your back.
