So maybe some of you are aware that I am in recovery (year four) from a serious motor vehicle accident. Not looking for pity at at all...this is one of those places on the web where I can park all that mess and focus on something I love.
I mention it because part of my challenge is a neurological injury that causes seizures and severe PTSD. I spent most of the summer escaping my triggers by living out in the sticks with my son -- an avid firearms enthusiast --in a little town with a population of 2000 where I see more deer than cars.
On his off days, we'd sometimes kit up complete with both bear and bug spray, and a collection of rifles including a Marlin 45/70, a 12 gauge pump-action and a cute little 22. Sometimes we'd hit clays, sometimes stupid shit like cans of shave foam or bottles of what you call soda ('pop' up here in the North).
I figured the noise and impact of a firearm would literally cause convulsions, but to my amazement, just being out in bear country where cell service is anything but a given and squeezing that trigger at a target 20 yards away gave me a hell of a lot of enjoyment. I dont wanna kick off any kind of 2nd Amendment talk here, but sport shooting is something that I found to be a pleasurable outing with my kid (he's 28) and oddly relaxing. We wear proper ear protection so that helps, but just trudging through a forest 10 miles out from anything resembling a habitable environment surrounded by nature while we squeeze off twenty bucks worth of ammo at a fixed target is an absolute riot.
Off topic as f@ck, but if anyone else is into that sorta shit, I'd love to hear your stories. Im going to try to get my firearms permit this winter -- Im relocating permanently up in the sticks on Wednesday -- and looking forward to just enjoing getting out there for a hike with a shotgun every now and then. The kid's waiting for his pistol (walther PDP 9 mm) which takes longer to get approved up here, then he's onto a bolt action.
I love the lever action models and when I am further along in my recovery, I plan on getting both a mare's leg and a Henry SBL like a 30-30.
I'd love to hear about your experiences and gain some knowledge from any of you more experienced owners/enthusiasts!

Been going out hunting in the Catskills for the last 40 yrs , use a Winchester 30-6 ,nothing like being in the woods …. Then of course a few drinks in the hunting cabin with the crew of 10 always makes for great times

I don’t hunt at all, I’m a target shooter. I’m not opposed to those that do hunt. From what I know, if you’re out hiking in bear country you should have a sidearm/pistol that packs a punch. A 9mm is probably a bit too weak to take out a bear unless you’re a crack shot with balls of iron. Most pistols are for up close defense, 10-15 yards. You’re probably better with .40 cal on your hip in case you can’t get the rifle up and on target fast enough.
The woods up north must be beautiful, especially coming into the fall season.

Good advice Chris. Thanks bud. We'll both be packing bear spray...he messaged me today to say his Walther is on the way, so hopefully between the spray and the 9 mm, we'll be able to keep safe! As of October, Canadians won't be able to purchase pistols so my boy was smart to apply for his before the cutoff. His Marlin could take down a dinosaur with a slug. We don't usually load up until we find a good spot to set up our targets though. Which gun do you like shooting best?

I enjoy shooting any gun. But, familiarity with the gun makes a difference to me personally. I'd rather not list my possessions, or the toys I'd like to possess in the current climate. I'll just say, legally I possess a NYS Pistol License and do have a couple pistols on it. 9mm's and .380. I'm heading down to Florida this week actually, and I am hoping to test a few new items to add to my collection. I'm contemplating either a CZ P10C 9mm or Canik TP9 Elite Combat or the SC, and a Taurus G3C ( which is smallest of the 3 but still holds 12 rds). I'd also like to add a Shotgun for down there as well and an AR. We'll see! One pistol will definitely be purchased this weekend. I have a CCW (Carry Conceal) for Florida, which gives my reciprocity in 30 states or so . But, the CCW Laws change from state to state regarding what you're actually allowed to carry concealed (ie: knives, sprays,etc..). You can purchase almost anything you want in Florida. Not in NY! My biggest issue is that I am a Left Handed Shooter Pistol, but Right Hand Rifle. I'm particular about my pistol choices because my hands are not the largest and I either need an Ambidextrous Mag release or need to customize/swap the release. But obviously, it has to be a comfortable fit. I'm still a novice, so don't take any of my pointers as KNOWLEDGEABLE. It's personal preference and experience. I don't have any real Cadilac's as far as weapons are concerned. I don't have the cash for that. But, I have enough toys to make me happy a few weekends here and there. I'm fortunate to have a few neighbors who are pretty knowledgeable and one who was a Top 3 Competitive AR shooter in the country. I pick their brains and ask questions. Safety First!!! I'll be honest and share a story. When I first got my Pistol Lic, there's a part of you that makes you feel like you're Big Bad and Brave. You feel tough because you know you have a gun. UNTIL, the first time you actually think you need to use it! I came home from work and no one was home, except my Shepherd. When I walked up the stairs inside my house, the sliding doors out to my deck were opened...but only enough to sneak thru sideways. I immediately went to my bedroom to secure my gun. Noticing that nothing in my room was messed up or ransacked. I quickly loaded a magazine and began to search my house. I'm actually pretty calm under pressure. But, my heart was racing. I started to piece together what was possibly going to go down...First, my dog who always greeted me at the door did not greet me. Then, I'm thinking, OK, am I really going to be able to pull the trigger on someone if they're in my house? Should I pull the trigger just because they're in my house? Lawfully can I do that???!!!! I cleared my main floor and proceeded quietly as possible to clear the lower level. I was confident but SHITTING MY PANTS!!! Moral of the story, just because you get a pistol license, it doesn't make you a Cowboy or Tough Guy!!! It takes balls and I mean big balls to squeeze that trigger knowing you 're about to take someones life. Unless, you're a low life scum bag. I know we have veterans and police in our midst, or former police...I know your duties may have required you to possibly draw your weapon or to be in combat. I do not envy your positions. I respect your service. You do what you have to do. In your professions, a second too late, is your life! In any case, I don't hunt because I'd probably cry my eyes out if I shot a deer. When I was a lad, I used to sharp shoot Squirrels and Birds with my Crossman 761XL...Never Cried!!! If I needed to kill to survive, I'd survive...but, I'm fine plinking holes in paper for now. PS...The door was left open by my kids who let the dog out from up stairs, but let him in thru downstairs and then left the house for hockey practice....Jerks! No one was home to see me crawled up in a ball crying my eyes out and wiping my ass at the same time! Fortunately for me! Come to think of it, my dog never gave me much respect after that day. PPS...I don't get a ton of enjoyment shooting targets either. I'm a very competitive person ( as some of you know ) and I always try my best...but, my best isn't always good. Especially as I've gotten older and I wear glasses and my fingers are too fat for my hands, and all that shit. Anyway...My mind KNOWS I can do better...but my MIND also lies to my body an awful lot! Skillset has dwindled considerably.

Anytime you think you may have an intruder and your dog doesn't come running, it's a fight or flight situation. With PTSD, you can't differentiate between a normal situation and a life threatening one. Oddly, when faced with a physical threat I don't have the sense to back off. I know Ninjitsu masters trained in China who still say when confronted, they'd rather run than test their bravery or fighting skills.
Here it's against the law to transport a loaded weapon. I'm sure up in the sticks, lots do, but my kid is a safety first guy and he's OCD as hell about it. I'm a bit of a target to people looking for an easy mark because I am clearly disabled. I always carry a nice thick Damascus blade in a sheath on my back at night. I doubt I'll ever need to draw it but I'm not taking chances. I wanna live long enough to win a round in this damn league! hahaha
