The only way for this to happen is that Varlamov was injured for the remainder of the game (no additional games just for the rest of today's game) at 18:45 of the 2nd period.
This dynamic of having injuries occur mid game and not just at the end of the game has been in place for at least 2 seasons now.

Unless the player is going to miss additional time after the current game, no. I think this is the way the NHL does it where the only way to deduce a player missed part of the game was perusing their minutes played.
