The city of Syracuse erupted in celebration as the Blazers, the hottest team in the GHL, clinched a playoff spot with three games left on the schedule. Bitter reminders of last season's final week collapse have now been washed away with the champagne of redemption.
"We thought it was going to come down to the last day of the season," GM DeLaMater said, "Some of our guys have been skating on fumes, taped up, patched together, playing with nothing but grit. Now we can catch a breath, celebrate an amazing run to clinch, and then re-focus on beating some franchises we'd love to upset."
The Blazers have gone a sensational 10-1-4 down the stretch to clinch after they were given up for dead. Once again, DeLaMater gave one of his characteristic "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor" speeches that the players credited with turning the season around. The talk, given on March 16th after a humbling 10-3 defeat to Baltimore, marks the last time the Blazers lost a hockey game.
"Behind the scenes, I was told I needed to give up the entire future for a player rental. For that and a handful of pocket lint. I refused to do it. The sense of entitlement is breath-taking at times. I would tell my fellow GMs to just say no to helping the dynasties from now on. So we kept our future: Quinn, Kulich, Annunen, Perfetti...and stuck with our veterans. Vrana and Forsberg got past their injuries and volunteered for more ice time. It's been a sight to behold. Whatever happens going forward, this regular season has been a success, a turning point."
The Blazers have called up Arber Xhekaj for tonight's celebration. "I'd hate to see anything happen to any of Halifax's guys tonight," Xhekaj said. "I've got so much admiration for what they have achieved this season."
"We want to see if we need to add a tough enforcer before the playoffs," DeLaMater said, dismissing the defensemen's comments. "So here's his chance to show us something."
