If that’s the case and all RFA 2021 can be selected in the expansion draft if not protected, I’m good with the rest

One player I found listed as a RFA who should be listed as UFA (it seems) is Brandon Tanev of Hartford. He was signed as a UFA by Hartford in 2018.

If that’s the case and all RFA 2021 can be selected in the expansion draft if not protected, I’m good with the rest I think it's the other way...all 18,19 and 20 picks are exempt and automatically protected

I'm really confused. 2018 picks would have 3 years in the league and thus coming off their ELC (if they didn't have any years push).

It makes no difference what year they were selected

Both Scotty's correctly reported that the players don't necessarily have to be drafted in order to be auto protected. They just need to be on their first pro contract still.

What we're trying to figure out, boss, is whether the 2021 RFA's will need to be protected or will they be automatically protected. According to the original post, they will be eligible for selection in the expansion draft unless protected by the owning team and I do not recall if the 2017 RFA's required protection or not.

Because the last expansion draft we used >= 2018 as the end year to identify exempt players it looks like guys coming off of their ELC need to be protected. Meaning they would only be excempt if their contracts ended in 2022 or later for us this year.

So for clarity to all, that means that 2021 RFA's and any player on a bridge contract will be eligible for selection by the expansion team unless protected.

Correct. Once the season is completed I will regenerate the list of excempt players (EE will appear beside their names on the team rosters) so guys will know who isn't protected by default and can start finalizing who they want to protect.

What about players such as Brandon Tanev, who was not drafted and signed a 4 year contract as his first pro contract, set to expire in 2022 as a RFA? Since he has completed 3 years in the GHL on a pro contract, would he need to be protected in the expansion draft? I'm not sure if there are other players in this situation, just found this one out of luck.
Elvis Merzlikins is another oddity. He signed as a UFA last offseason to a two year deal. Because of his age (27), would he need to be protected in the expansion draft or is he exempt since he has less than 3 years completed in the GHL?

Length of the first contract is immaterial. Most guys are drafted and have 3 years but for the ones who were signed as UFAs to their first contracts (not drafted) are protected if their 1st contract ends on or after 2022. These were the rules we had in place last time based on the queries I am reviewing that we used 4 years ago.

Question: Are we going to see the player cards BEFORE we make our decisions on who to expose for the Expansion Draft?
I hope so, as it most likely makes a difference to all of us.

Of course. Cards will be dropped well before the expansion draft to give owners (most importantly, Brenden) plenty of time to review. My guess is that we are still about 3-4 weeks away from the expansion draft and less than a week away from card drop. Just educated guesses.

Ive seen a few players with NMC. The NMC wasn’t in effect when I was here before. Can someone please explain how it works? And if it will effect protection lists (have to protect that player)? Thanks!
