The change would be that a drafted player (at least top 3 rounds if not all) would be considered a prospect until he plays at least 20 (10 if a goalie) NHL games before losing his prospect status. We have too many cases of guys playing in the minors for a year or 2 of seasoning and maybe only have one year (or no years) of NHL experience under their belt to aid an owner in determining what to do now that his ELC is over.
This would also keep these players salaries from hitting the books until they were no longer prospects.

I also vote for all rounds. However, I see an unintended situation happening where if players never lose their prospect status in this scenario, in years (3+) to come, with other players retiring or not having cards, teams might not be able to reach the minimum of 45 players. We'd basically lose the guys who have AHL caliber cards in the future.
My suggestion would be to allow 2 or 3 years (2 probably) of prospect status if player is playing in the AHL, and then start the ball rolling on the entry level contract. That would be up to 5 years after the player was drafted in the GHL to determine if they should receive another contract. This way, if drafted players only make it to the AHL, they will lose their prospect status after 2 years, and keep the player pool going.

Another way we could do this is to just raise the amount of AHL games from 27 played to 60-65 played, which is almost a full AHL season (76 games), while keeping the current 20 NHL games

Excellent point Brenden. We might be able to add something that they would lose their prospect status after they played 80, 100, some number of total games int he AHL or NHL.

If it were me, I'd still have them separate like we do currently. 20 NHL only games, 60 AHL only games, and maybe like 45-50 combined AHL/NHL since NHL games are weighted more heavily.

Agree!
Call it the Hampus Lindholm Rule. I had to give him a pro contract of 4.5 mil before he even had a GHL usable card. Got me very bitter on Hampy. I jinxed his pro career!

Have we addressed how this is going to affect roster construction? Will teams be required to carry 5 goalies now that more will probably be considered prospects? We need 160 goalies for every team to have 5.
With players we need 1,280 players for each team to have 40.
Do we have numbers to see how many goalies and players would not be considered prospects under the new rules?

Yeah...we have a goalie problem with some lucky teams having 3-4 NHL starters...maybe even all 5 !
Each team should only have to have 4 goalies on the roster.

Yeah...we have a goalie problem with some lucky teams having 3-4 NHL starters...maybe even all 5 ! Each team should only have to have 4 goalies on the roster. but they should be allowed to have 5, even 6 if they want... This would make it easier to include goalies in trades as opposed to before when every goalie trade needed to involve another going the other way.

This year teams will be requited to carry 5. No more, no less. This is the way it was prior to last years COVID affected season.
