I guess my question is will these be processed before or after the expansion draft because there are a few players (atleast one forward, one defenseman and one goalie) I have my eye on who didn’t play last year for one reason or another? For example, let’s say hypothetically that St Paul didn’t protect Jonathan Toews and decided he didn’t want to deal with that contract when he comes back so he didn’t retain him for 100k. I decide I’m ok with the contract and target him for my expansion pick and retain him for 100k this season but full contract next season. Would I have that chance to select him or would he disappear until next off season when he has a card again? I’m fine with it either way. Just for my list it would be helpful knowing if they’d still be available or not. Seeing as Glenn is protecting Kucherov from his own list of "On Books - No Card" players I'd say the answer is yes.
If he wasn't retained but released he would be a UFA at that time. Since he would be a UFA you could not target him as an expansion pick. The only way you could target his as an expansion pick is if ST Paul retained him but didn't protect him (which isn't likely).

I was thinking more if it's done prior and those players are gone from their roster (if they choose not to keep them for 100k), they wouldn't be available for selection and would disappear. I'm definitely with you on the protection part. If they wouldn't be gone from the roster, please disregard my post. Here's what teams can do with these players. Pay 100k and retain rights If Injured all year or in Europe (waive for free - since they have no card they aren't available as UFAs this year) If not Injured/Europe buy one out (since they have no card they aren't available as UFAs this year) Aren't we also allowed to drop ELC players that haven't played a GHL game yet? Some of those showing in the On Books - No Card section would fall under this description.

Yes, any player on his ELC can be dropped off he hasn't played any GHL games

Are we officially operating off the timeline at the start of this thread? Just curious as we still have several teams who have yet to submit their protect lists - if they fail to do so by a certain time does someone else choose for them or are they considered to not be protecting anyone at all?

I would suggest there be a deadline and if teams don’t have a list then a committee of 3 guys pick there protected players so we move this off season along

I'm pretty sure there is a deadline. Or at least that's what the time-line suggests

Deadline for protection is 6/30/2021
Every year we always get F points before all this too...

What will happen for the protected lists from the outstanding 5ish teams if they don't submit by Wednesday night/Thursday morning?

What will happen for the protected lists from the outstanding 5ish teams if they don't submit by Wednesday night/Thursday morning? Right now, there are 6. I'm not worried about 5 of them, they will post. Only one I believe is M.I.A at the moment is Montreal. This could present a problem as it is the 2nd year n a row to be missing during off- season events.

I absolutely know what position (and almost positive on the player that will be available at that position) I’m taking from Hershey and Quebec, Edmonton will probably just be a cheap player since that roster is in flux, Montreal I’m pretty sure I know what player will be available. New Jersey is the wild card because he could go in a couple different ways. I think those are the only teams left to send in their protected lists so I’d say as long as New Jersey does, we could go on regardless. Obviously that won’t be the case though

Boston... but he as well as the others you mentioned are not worrisome. Only Montreal is a concern
