This is my favorite event. I love everything about the off-season, especially this year having a bonus event in the expansion, but the draft is by far the one event that interests me the most. Scouting is the part of being a (RPG) general manager that I have the most time and effort invested in. I scout all year round. I do not need to see player cards to know where to rank a player on my draft board. It is at this time every summer that my hopes are high that the draft will roll smoothly. It is also at this time every summer that I am let down. I'm not blaming anyone but myself for this. I know my expectations are too high. I personally see no reason that we can't at least get through a round a day, but I know that will not happen. I'm torn between managers posting lame excuses and an understanding that we all (or at least most of us) have real lives. Yes, I know that this is the time of year that we get to go on vacation and spend more time with our family and friends and I am within a week of indulging in some well deserved vacation time myself. I will be at the lake swimming with my children, fishing, having a few cold ones by the camp fire, etc. and obviously during much of this time, I will not be bringing my phone along and I will not be caring much about whether I am supposed to be making a pick. I will make my pick quickly, however, and see no reason with today's technology that every single owner can't do the same. If I am in the mountains on a lake and can manage to make a draft pick, so can you. I have too often thought about intentionally holding the draft up every time my pick comes up simply to stall and get us into the 10 minute windows. Being on the clock severely limits trade talks and can often lead to teams being skipped and teams behind you taking a player you had your eye on. Ya, I know, no big deal in the 4th round but how would you like it in the 2nd, or even the first, if I stall long enough because I'm out on the boat fishing all day and can't find it within myself to pull out my phone and see where the draft is and take 2 minutes of my valuable time to make a pick before I go to sleep at night. This article will be scrutinized by many league members who will post that their lives are more important than fantasy hockey. They are right, but I don't care. My real life is more important as well, but I'll still make my picks quickly, and so can you...if you want to.
