My goal is having the draft lottery between GHL playoff rounds this year. Perhaps if we have one or more game 7s in a round, we could coordinate the lottery for immediately after the game ends. We could then fold the lottery into the 1st monthly league meeting for owners to brainstorm on how to make the league better (sim/processes/additional stats) whatever.
There is something to be said about doing this a little later in May too because there will be more gaps in NHL playoff games to allow fans of teams still in the playoffs (I am looking at you NY boys) a chance to attend without missing your NHL team.
Torts wouldn't care and might say, "I don't know any of those GHL owners from a hole in the wall".

Please review. Here is the base order that will be used to determine how many cards/ping pong balls each team gets. The top row teams get 3, middle row 2, and bottom row 1. The draft lottery will take place at the end/near the end, of round 2. More details coming soon.

Are we only picking the top 3 spots? NHL based model

No, it will be conducted as it was last year. I just unlocked and edited the rule book to reflect the discussion held in the 2023 Draft Lottery thread to address any confusion surrounding the process. You can find that thread here: gtgfhl.proboards.com/thread/6461/2023-draft-lottery

In the NHL (Glenn's favorite 3 words), only the lottery winners are selected, and then all other teams move down accordingly. So is our lottery an elimination process or exactly how does it work?

looks like 31 total 'cards' representing all 16 non-playoff / lottery eligible teams, are lying flat on a virtual table.
ALL 31 cards will be picked by random one at a time.
ANY of the 16 teams can get lucky and move up all the way to #1.
No team can move back more than three spots.
Looks like the NHL = whichever teams are slotted between No. 12-16 cannot get the No. 1 pick. If they do win either the No. 1 or No. 2 drawing, they will move up 10 spots in the order, but that is it.

It's an elimination in so far as once a team with 3 balls has their last ball picked, it will be slotted into it's starting slot + 3 if and only if it's last ball is lower spot in the draft. If another team has already moved up into that spot, that other team will be moved down one and push any other teams below them down as well. gtgfhl.proboards.com/post/55794We had that happen at last years draft lottery at least one time. Once Syracuse's lone ball was pulled 2nd, Matt was locked into 16th overall. When Hershey's last card was pulled as the 14th , he was locked into 8th overall (because that spot was better/higher than the spot he would have been slotted in) because of the 3 spot maximum slip.

It would be so much simpler to just pick the top 3 spots. I understand that would be less dramatic but the elimination process is confusing and unnecessary. Just my opinion.

the big takeaway is Glenn (Matt DlM is a big proponent of anti-tanking) is using this format to affect an 'anti tanking' measure that is not used in the NHL.

Anti-tanking is the only reason the NHL Draft Lottery exists. If that's the reason we do ours so completely different, I'd love to see the numbers concerning odds of GHL vs. NHL teams winning the lottery.

But I'm with you Scott and Brian. We should use the exact same format / procedure / rules as the current NHL.
Not only is it accurate and therefore fun...
But being an official NHL product, we can easily look it up online and see everything about it. No need for interpretation and postings.

Here is the part of the draft lottery that I had never seen before. We could do something similar but I think the way we do it allows for a greater transparency to make sure there are no shenanigans. In past years I had only seen the Deputy Commissioner flip the placards to show the results. I think as an active GM with a vested interest in the results, a maximum transparency solution is paramount.
We certainly aren't going to make any changes for this years draft however anyone can join and discuss the merits of changes moving forward.
