yeah, what G said....
But Kaberle, who doesnt have a good defensive rating, and doesnt get alot of PK time.....its because he has never been a good defensive defenseman.....never was, never will be...
Dont use him as an example...Peace, Im out!

I don't see how that can work, if you weigh pk toi less in the calculations, the defensive stats for players who play the pk almost certainly have to suffer a little. Guts who play the pk should have better stats than those who don't anyway. As I said, just don't want to see them get under-rated as we try to bring up stats for guts that don't. I do agree that guys who played in the Nhl, such as my examples probably deserve a little better rating, but I don't think we should be talking huge jumps here. And Christopher, in Kaberle's defense, he blocked way more shots than any of the rest of those guys and I bet ranked pretty high in the league in that category.

Good stuff Scott....but Kaberle blocked more shots because he probably faced more shots, because he was playing on a horrible defensive team. ( Tor )...The first time he ever was a PLUS was on Boston, and that is because the rest of his team was defensively responsible.
Look at guys on our FHL teams who are leading the SHOTS BLOCKED categories.....The reason they are leading those categories are because they FACE THE MOST SHOTS....not neccessarily because they are good shot blockers.
Just sayin...Kaberle has never been known as a shot blocking dman...he has always been considered an offensive dman....maybe your thinking of his brother Frantisek...lol...

I always did like Frankie more than Tomas ...while I would like the offensive d-men to have more value, I don't want to defensive guys to have less. I do think guys like Babchuk and Visnovsky should be able to play minutes without the owner worrying about them getting eaten up while on the ice. It seems like they don't have much value in the FHL but I have built my team defense on defensive d-men and don't want them to lose value either. Both styles have value in the NHL, so I think both should have value here. I'm sure Glenn will make this work, I have faith in our fearless leader

Don't count your chickens... Not sure of the math but he's gonna have to get in a lot more time to even have a usable card. With only one game, his minor league time will significantly reduce his card value.

I figured as much. That's why I asked. Glenn I'm still just wondering........ if he only has 1 NHL game his stats will be almost completely driven by his AHL numbers. I memory serves the best AHL goalies end up being like 24-24.

Why do I continuously challenge the "Glenn-Master"..Why Oh why??? Excellent Glenn, but...lets look into why Datsyuk is only a 27 on the Defense as well...the guy is up a 4th year in a row for the Selke Trophy...Some major props in the works I hope! Yeah, defense is always the tougher of the two nuts to crack when developing algorithms for assigning points/skills. Here is the algorithm that is executed to determine the composite defensive score: DefComp: IIf([statmassage].[pos]='D',Int(([blkshot])+Int([takeaway])+Int([giveaway])+(([tottoi]/[2010skaters].[gp])*0.85)+([shpct]*80)+((([plusminus]-(1*[esp]))-[teampm])/5)),Int((([blkshot])+Int([takeaway])+Int([giveaway])+(([tottoi]/[2010skaters].[gp])*0.85)+([shpct]*80)+((([plusminus]-(1*[esp]))-[teampm])/5))*0.9)) The main ingredients (with varying amounts used if F or D) are: seconds played between blocked shots seconds played between takeaways seconds played between giveaways percentage of time played shorthanded and lastly player plus minus compared to teams plus minus If there are some other thoughts on ways to determine a defensive score, I am all ears and hope folks would have some suggestions which they can post here. Just poking around after some trade discussions...Because this does not directly answer my question or the other GM I am discussing with, and because there are random other discussions in this thread...I am posing this to Glenn, because he is the person WHO CAN answer... Here goes: Glenn, can you do your best to explain Player Card reasoning for giving ANY player a "Zero Rating" and a player rating "Above 100" For Ex: Nazem Kadri "0" Stick Check and "0" Deny Space. Kadri had 42 takeaway's last season, I imagine one two or maybe three of them may have been by way of stick check, No? Chris Tanev has a 103 on Defense...Hmmm My question, more like statement, is....How can ANY player be a Zero, and how can ANY player be better than 100? Also, Why do we have above 100 benchmark, and why do we have a Zero? Also, Of what importance or AFFECT does having a Zero have on Game Situations? I imagine, a Zero Greatly affects a players ability, No?! Gentlemen, Please refrain from sticking your two-cents into this post....You can only have opinions...It's needs to have the Master G answer it....

1st don't think of 100 as a cap when it comes to player cards as they can go much higher if I'm not mistaken 120 might be the highest possible based on 6 stats all maxed at 10. Crosby 112 cam closest I believe.
So once that number is determined it gets raked into the 6 sub categories, I'm not sure but I believe the player evaluations we can do have some impact on the distribution.
Tanev D rating for example 8 - Stick Check 10 - Deny Space 8 - Range 9- Awareness 8- Lane Ctrl 8 - Sht Block
51 total if old system but doubled is a 103 (believe some rounding up occured)
Kadri
29 D Rating 0 Stick Check 0 Deny Space 4 Range 6 Awareness 2 Back Check 3 Shot Block
15 total if old system 29 new system (rounding down occured)
I think your question is more how is the D rating allocated to the 6 subcategories, ie. why isn't kadri a 2,2,4,2,2,3 instead.

I know this question came up years ago when I believe we had some other peeps that had zero ratings. What that means is that he doesn't have zero chance to poke check somebody he just has a zero modifier when he tries to poke check someone.
Lets say this, on a given play Kadri is trying to stick check McDavid who is twirling around and dangling like a crazy MFer. Lets say Kadris base chance to poke check McDavid is 35% and lets say each skill point can adjust this up or down 2%. Becvause McDavid has a stick handle of 8 and Kadris poke check is a 0 Kadris has a 35% base + 0x2 (his rating times 2) - 8x2 (McDavids stick handle times 2) or a 35 + 0 - 16 or 24% chance to make the poke check.
As Dane mentioned the individual rankings are based on the total defense rating spread out across the sub scores.
That being said, If you were to rate Kadri on D as a 2,2,4,2,2,3 he would have those relative rankings next year based on others ratings of him and his overall D score as well.

Just curious is the stat distribution on a guy without ratings random?
Along the same lines maybe we can give a small FP contribution if someone watches and rates a game. If everyone assigned an NHL team to rate and gets a 5 point bonus to do it might have 70-75% of players in NHL rated.

To me, it would sure be easier to understand if 100 equaled 100, and Zero meant Zero. I didn't realize that I was going to have to learn Mandarin to understand how things work in this league. It's very intimidating to me, to listen to most of you super intels discuss things in this league. Makes people feel like they don't belong.
You guys continue to do you, I'll continue to play old school. Just know, that when I say "I like something" it actually means I like something. No wonder you guys NEVER believe me when I say something on this site...you all speak some secret encryption language.
