Glenn, I know you are busy, I am just wondering, when do you think it will be possible to view what the new player cards will look like.
It would be great if we had them before the draft, this way we could have a good sense of our needs ( strengths and weaknesses ) and for making trades.

Ditto.
Who"makes" the cards - how are the stats generated ?

I have been working on them since the regular season ended and will get the out there as soon as possible. To answer Phil's question, i developed the algorithms last year and will be feeding this years stats (garnered from The hockey news, the NHL, the AHL and the ECHL websites.

Why do I continuously challenge the "Glenn-Master"..Why Oh why???
Excellent Glenn, but...lets look into why Datsyuk is only a 27 on the Defense as well...the guy is up a 4th year in a row for the Selke Trophy...Some major props in the works I hope!

Yeah, defense is always the tougher of the two nuts to crack when developing algorithms for assigning points/skills. Here is the algorithm that is executed to determine the composite defensive score: DefComp: IIf([statmassage].[pos]='D',Int(([blkshot])+Int([takeaway])+Int([giveaway])+(([tottoi]/[2010skaters].[gp])*0.85)+([shpct]*80)+((([plusminus]-(1*[esp]))-[teampm])/5)),Int((([blkshot])+Int([takeaway])+Int([giveaway])+(([tottoi]/[2010skaters].[gp])*0.85)+([shpct]*80)+((([plusminus]-(1*[esp]))-[teampm])/5))*0.9)) The main ingredients (with varying amounts used if F or D) are: seconds played between blocked shots seconds played between takeaways seconds played between giveaways percentage of time played shorthanded and lastly player plus minus compared to teams plus minus If there are some other thoughts on ways to determine a defensive score, I am all ears and hope folks would have some suggestions which they can post here.

My thoughts initially are: Just make Datsyuk a "50" defensive Rating...LOL....and I'll be happy!

Good find Phil. I want to add an area on the web site for league rules and how stats are used. This is a prime type of info we want to gather. I am going to start a thread where these type of issues can all be referenced. That being said, if you have the inclination to dig these type of threads up, place a link to them in the soon to be created thread/board and identify what the thread is about. In regards to this rating it very well might get some tweakage where good defensive players are not penalized because they don't kill penalties. This would mean that there would be a bump for killing penalties for the players that do that but not a negative for the players who don't. As stated prior, defense rating is always the toughest one to quantify.

I think every team's defense would be full of 40 something cards. Are the guys who don't kill penalties penalized or are the guys who do rewarded? I will agree that there may not be enough value in an offensive defensemen but what are some of the cards like for guys who played 82 games last season but didn't kill penalties, I would like to see the difference in these cards before we go making changes to this. My feeling is that defense is a valuable commodity and I don't want to see us undervalue it.
Here are some players I found for examples, I will look at cards when the dog cam is asleep tonight.
The first stat is games played, the second is average pk time on ice per game, the third is player plus/minus
Dustin Byfuglien : 81/:05/-2 Tomas Kaberle : 82/:17/+4 Cody Franson : 80/:06/+10 Anton Babchuk : 82/:30/+14 Keith Yandle: 82/:43/+12

That is precisely why I want to review it because I think some guys (forwards especially) who don't kill penalties may not be getting a high enough of a rating.
