Conflation.
I don't think waivers were ever free. You can drop anyone for free that meets the criteria and each team is allowed to waive 1 player with penalty.

The Aces are saying goodbye to team leader in games played Lars Eller , second all time in team points first in games played , Lars had 3 productive seasons out of the 6 plus seasons on the team ….. who knows he might come back and be resigned at a lesser rate …..but for now Eller is being bought out at a $750,000 cap hit for the upcoming season

Oh yeah...used to be 100% free. Mike weaver fruit basket rule change. No, there has always been a cost for this. The cost was raised a few years back as well. The Weaver rule was needing to sign a player for 2 years minimum if paying him over 6M. The common practice before this was signing him for 1 year at a time at an exorbitant price. |

As for Colton Point, Glenn, I have a question: If I elect not to retain him, am I on the hook for $266,666 this season?

I am researching Colton Point. If he didn't play any games in the GHL I think you should be able to drop him for free. If he did (play/dress for) one game or more then you could use your one allowed waiver on him for 267k and he would be off your bucks forever or do nothing and eat his 800k until his contract runs out.
