Cornwall single waiver per team/season with penalty (in this case - 1 year, no penalty heh) Carter Hutton If you are waiving him then a penalty is imposed. It would be more if it was multiple years but there still is a hit for a single year.

That's way too cheap, we need to fix this rule agree. I've argued for fixing it for years and now it's on my team....like the Donald and his taxes. Just using what rules we have to my benefit.

I think we are all in agreement here. We need to stiffen up penalties before people start dropping 8M bombs again in a few weeks.

Why not just have no drop 8mil+ for the 2 year min. Same rule after that.

I also wouldn’t be opposed to just no dropping a UFA you signed for 2 years. I don’t know if it’s ever happened where an NHL team uses a buyout on a guy a year after he signs

We need to up the penalty across the board IMHO. Something very loosely like, the fraction of years left on the contract times the yearly contract value. In the case of the 8M 2 year contract it would be 1 early on 2 total (or 1/2) * 8M yearly or 4M dollars. For the same contract 8M but 3 year term, after year 1 dropping last 2 would be 2/3 * 8M or 5.7M * 2 (for 2 years left) or 11.4M buyout. Again, that is some very loose figure but I think the penalties should be much more severe then they are right now.

I'm opposed to that for two reasons
1. Penalty for cutting a player that exceeds his yearly cap hit only exists in the NFL and these players are rarely cut until some savings can be had. 2. This would give very little to no incentive to sign a UFA long term, even reasonably priced guys like Zuccarello
Zuccarello Contract 5 years 5.1mil 1st year buyout - 16.32 mil penalty 2nd year buyout - 9.18 mil penalty 3rd year buyout - 4.08 mil penalty Final year buyout - 1.02 mil penalty
NHL Contract 5 years 6.0 mil 1st year buyout 2/3rd of remaining contract (24 mil) = 16 mil Spread over twice remaining years (4) = 8 years = 2 mil a year for 8 years
One makes it almost impossible to use your buyout until the final year, NHL makes you think if you really want the 4 mil savings now to lose 2 mil in cap the next 7 years.
I understand we don't want to track cap hits into future years, and some team could ruin a franchise cap situation in a matter of days. But would still like to see something that allows buyouts to still be a viable option.

I'm also going on record saying I think our current calculation is fine except for people circumventing it by signing 2-3 year deals and buying out first year.
Maybe just use a sliding scale for all UFAs
For a player signed 2 years or 6 years it is the same.
8 mil contract
After 1st year. 90% = 7.2 mil After 2nd year. 75% = 6.0 mil After 3rd year. 60% = 4.8 mil After 4th year. 45% = 3.6 mil After 5th year. 33% = 2.64 mil
