Thanks Chris. So, just to understand this correctly, a buyout with penalty for a player with term only applies to retired players?

I'm going to defer answering that question, to one of the more tenured fellows

Thanks Chris. So, just to understand this correctly, a buyout with penalty for a player with term only applies to retired players? You can use your buyout on a retired player but it doesn't have to be used on a retired player. It can be used on an active player as well, however, if a player retires from the NHL and is still under contract with your team, you are on the hook for the remainder of his deal unless you buy him out

Retirement ALWAYS = penalty.
the only way to not get penalized by a retiring player is to use your One waiver on him, and even then, you will be paying some of his contract.

So if I want to drop Polak and clear cap space what is the penalty?

The annual savings on his contact multiplied by the number of years remaining. In Polak's case, with only one year left on his contract, you'd pay a $107,500 penalty to waive him

No problem, just a reminder to all, no decisions are required at this time on any of your players. Glenn will post when the waiver/player decision period is open as well as when it ends
